Middle School Electives Summary

Let's talk about your middle schooler's journey at Murphy Creek! It's time for them to pick their electives for the 2025-26 school year, and this is a pretty cool process. Think of it as them getting to choose their own adventure in learning!

Here's the deal: Murphy Creek Middle School wants every student to explore a bit of everything. So, during the year, they need to pick at least one elective from each of the main subject areas. To make it easier, the school year is divided into four quarters, and each quarter has two "blocks" – Block A and Block B.

Now, this is where your student comes in. They'll get to choose their top two favorite electives for Block A and their top two for Block B for each quarter. It's like they're creating their own mini-schedule of awesome classes. The school's really encouraging them to pick from all the different subjects – Art, Music, P.E., and STEAM (that's Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). If they skip a subject, the school will pick a class for them, and we want to avoid that!

Because of how the schedule works, whatever electives your child chooses will stick with them for the whole year. There won't be any switching classes later on. So, it's important to help them choose wisely!

Here's a glimpse into the kinds of adventures they can choose:

  • Art: If your child is into creating, they might try Photography, Painting, Sculpture (no 3D printing, though!), Drawing, Ceramics, Printmaking, Fiber Arts (think cool hand-sewing projects), or even Digital Art using Procreate on iPads.
  • Music: For the musically inclined, there's Drum Set & Percussion, Build Your Own Instrument, Ukulele, Songwriting, Virtuosos (a vocal ensemble), Musical Music (to support the school musical!), and Talent Show/Continuation (for 8th graders involved in the talent show).
  • P.E.: If your student is all about being active, they can choose from things like Lawn & Leisure Games, Ultimate Frisbee, Disc Golf, Soccer, Volleyball (basic and advanced), Floor Hockey, Basketball (basic and advanced), Rock Climbing & Archery, Flag Football, and Kickball.
  • STEAM: For the future innovators, there are options like Learn to Sew, Design Lab, Civil Engineering, Sphero Odyssey (coding robots!), Babysitting Training, Lego Lab, CPR/First Aid/AED, Robot Rodeo, Dash Robots, Sewing 2 (Pajama Pants!), Gamebuilders (designing video games!), K'nex Amusement Park, STEAMland (exploring Google Suite and Micro:bits), American Sign Language, and Lego Bricks & Bots.
  • Academic Counseling/Other: There are also unique electives like "6th Grade Launchpad," which helps 6th graders connect and navigate middle school, and "8th Grade Student Assistant," where 8th graders can help out in elementary classrooms. "World Works" is another option for 6th and 7th graders, where they can learn entrepreneurial skills.

To help your child navigate these exciting choices, Murphy Creek has provided special forms for each grade level:

Make sure your student fills out the form and submits it by Monday, May 12, 2025.

This is a fantastic opportunity for your middle schooler to explore new interests, develop new skills, and have a lot of fun while learning. Encourage them to think about what they're passionate about and what they'd like to try, and help them make some great choices!
